As a disclaimer, since all of the commentors on Crunchyroll felt obligated to point this out—yes, I’m fully aware the stuff I’m talking about in this post wasn’t “invented” by anime for this particular genre. Of course, I probably don’t need to tell you guys that. You know me well enough to actually listen to what I’m trying to say. Ah, well, such is the price for writing for an audience on a big site versus on my blog. That’ll teach me to sell out…
Ping Pong the Animation – Bluray/DVD Review
You wish you were as good at ping pong as Ping Pong is at telling a story about people who play ping pong.

Anime Weekly: Summer 2015, Week 3
I suppose I should be thinking up something insightful to say at this point, but I’ve really got nothing for you guys in terms of summing up the past week of anime. The season’s off to a good start and I’m enjoying pretty much everything that I’m watching, but as a season I’m not overly impressed or disappointed. Everything just kind of is, and if your kind of anime is airing (like it is for me) it’s a pleasant time to be keeping up with the shows that we’ve got.
Aniwords – What is Moe and Should You Be Afraid of It?
Hey, guys!
My latest Aniwords column is live on Crunchyroll and it’s a real important one this time.
It’s about moe.
Hysteria!: Existential Panic in the Storytelling of Angel Beats
If you believe in any sort of afterlife at all, it’s fairly easy to conceptualize our time here on earth as a sort of perpetual adolescence. At all stages of our conscious lives—whether teenage, young adult, middled-aged, or elderly—we’re haunted by the uncertainty of the world around us, riddled with the bullets of life, buffeted by the winds of of our emotions. It is, one might say, tough to be be alive and to make sense of life. And perhaps it’s a bit silly to take a story as patently juvenile as Angel Beats! [P.A. Works, 2010] as a microcosm for the full breadth of human life, but as TK might say, “Get chance and luck!”
Aniwords – Is Rating Shows Meaningless?
Sorry I’m late with this one—the internet guys broke my internet on Tuesday night. Anyways, this week’s column is a thesis of sort on why I continue to rate shows, despite knowing all the arguments against it, arguments espoused by many of my fellow anibloggers whose thoughts on art I really respect. But, I like to be a bit contrary sometimes, so here I go~
Here’s the link! I apologize for not having any bonus content ready for this week—busted internet has really screwed up my writing schedule…
Anime Weekly: Summer 2015, Week 2
The weekly roundup or rundown or highlights (or whatever you want to call them) are back! As it happens, I’m going back to the normal Wednesday release schedule for this season…and you’ll also notice that I’ve navigated away from the clunky “Highlights of the Week” to something a bit snappier (and maybe a bit more SEO friendly): “Anime Weekly.” In the end, nothing’s really changing—this is still going to be the catch-all post for the week that compiles my thoughts on everything I’ve been watching. It’s just easier to type out the title now.
And a good thing, too, because despite my best efforts to cull my watchlist for this season, I’m still carrying 15 shows—5 more than the target set for myself at the beginning of the season.
Summer 2015 Anime: First Impressions (Part 3)
By this point, I was pretty burned out with watching new series, but some shows managed to pull through pretty well! It’s both a nice surprise and also kind of bad because I’m at the point where I’m trying to cut shows, not add them.
In any case, here’s the final installment of my first impressions on Summer 2015’s anime offerings! Hope you enjoy!
Summer 2015 Anime: First Impressions (Part 2)
This is the good batch. The eight shows I was most looking forward to out of the whole season. As I begin this post, I’ve not watched a single episode of any of them—and I’ve avoided most reactions to them as well. Come the end of this post, I’ll either be joyful…or miserable, depending on how it all shakes out.
And, for fun, I’m trying something new: live blogging. For the rest of the night, I’m just going to be watching anime and blogging my thoughts on them—one at a time. That rounds out to something like an update every 30 minutes. Strap in—it’s gonna be a fun ride (I hope…)!
Aniwords – What Makes a “Good” Season?
This week’s Aniwords is kind of fluffy (at least by my standards), but with the new season exploding in piles of new anime all around me, I think I can be forgiven by putting out a somewhat less intense effort.
