Shirobako Midshow Thoughts

January 11, 2015January 7, 2015iblessall 3 Comments

This piece was originally published in the tri-weekly Crunchyroll Newsletter. You can read the article, and others on the Newsletter page.

There are lots of ways to build an anime. You can take a particular thematic thread and spin an entire narrative out of that single thought. You can seek to provide titillation for a target audience and use every possible chance to create it. Or you can take a few indomitable truths about the way we humans live and infuse your story with them. This final way (although these three are by no means a comprehensive list) is the way Shirobako has chosen; however, in a different way than many anime have chosen. Where great fantasy epics explore the vast darknesses and lights of humanity, Shirobako illuminates the ways in which we work and communicate in the modern world.

YuYuYu Midseason Thoughts

November 27, 2014November 24, 2014iblessall 8 Comments

This piece was originally published in the tri-weekly Crunchyroll Newsletter. You can read the article, and others on the Newsletter page.

I initially picked up Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru (officially abbreviated as YuYuYu) as my requisite “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” anime of the season and, well, it has occasionally filled that spot and occasionally…not. That is, unless you consider slashing through world destroying monsters with giant swords or punching through rock hard monster souls or flying through space on gun chairs to be cute—if so, then YuYuYu’s cute all the time.

First Impressions: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

July 20, 2014September 21, 2014iblessall 5 Comments

Note: There is now a Full Series Review available!

Note: This article was later published in the Crunchyroll Newsletter.

I know I already have a general First Impressions post up, but Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun is good enough to merit a first impressions post of its own—if you aren’t already watching this show, you should be. It’s the best Dogakobo show since Summer 2013’s Love Lab, and that’s high praise. We’re three weeks in, and Nozaki-kun has shown itself to be a top-shelf comedy anime—one based around endearing, colorful, and funny characters with the production quality to back it all up.

Love Live! School Idol Project 2: First Impressions

April 29, 2014June 6, 2014iblessall 3 Comments

Note: This piece was originally written for, and was later published in the Crunchyroll Newsletter for April 29, 2013. You will be able to check out this post, and much more by following the link above!

As someone who did not watch the first season of Love Live! and with only one other idol-based anime under his belt (last season’s Wake Up Girls!), I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into the second season of Love Live! Would I be able to understand the character dynamics? Would I be missing out on a bunch of inside jokes? Would I even like an idol anime at all?
