Guys, let me tell you, I’ve got absolutely no clue what makes me pop off for almost two thousand words like I did in this column. I was just planning for it to be regular length and by the time I’d finished chasing down all the threads I’d started out with I ended up with this monster of a post—although, to be fair, I think it’s a rather good one. I hope you guys like it! I think it explores some interested ideas.
Much like Eureka 7 itself, my thoughts on the show are scattered, wide-ranging, and affectionate—so in lieu of anything resembling a traditional review or reflection, I present you with a series of mini-essays on various aspects of the show.
Tongue-in-cheek title aside (I seem to wind up with a lot of those for these columns, not sure why), this probably ranks up there with the more ambitious posts in terms of attempted idea communication that I’ve done for Crunchyroll. It’s also potentially one of the most flawed (depending on what you think of some of the underlying assumptions I made in writing it), but haven’t I always said that flawed anime can be interesting? I hope this post is, as well.
The way this blog has been lately, you’d almost think I wasn’t even watching any anime this season (that would be false).
I didn’t mean to write two posts in a row about the role of setting in certain anime—it just kind of turned out that way. In the spotlight is a somewhat broader selection of shows than I’m normally accustomed to writing about, as I try my best to encapsulate the general character of the anime made by studio P.A. Works. in a single column. Surprisingly perhaps, I think I wound up having more of a solid case than even I expected at the beginning of my writing. You guys will have to let me know what you think!
I was reflecting on my drive home about anime that have made me legitimately angry. I think I cut out of Re:ZERO before I got to that point.
Nisekoi is over and the promises made (not to Onodera) were largely kept.
This season is full of good things to write about!
So, we’ll kick things off with Amanchu! Going from Princess Tutu, the only other Junichi Sato I’ve seen aside from a single episode of Aria, to Amanchu! is a bit of a shift and certainly not an equal one, but Sato’s reputation with this kind of show precedes him despite a lack of personal experience and thus far in I can understand why. Amanchu! glows. I really like that, and I hope I’ve articulated with some grace how I think this comes about.
We’re into the second third of the season’s premieres and I think I’m starting to see my weekly schedule slowly putting itself together out there in the distance. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but I’m getting the feeling that some shows are going to hold up over the long run and others aren’t. The more I watch, the more I have perspective on the stuff I’ve already seen, and the more I feel ready for the season to actually start.
It’s Love Live! It’s back, it’s here, I’m happy, Hanamaru best girl after one episode (disclaimer: best girl decision not final). And so, because I’m not quite over the girls of μ’s yet, I wrote up a little something about what Sunshine!! has inherited from the original series: namely, a spirit of joy. It’s a topic I’ve sort of written on before, but it’s neat to see how these sort of things can crossover so strongly from shows not in direct continuity with each other. It’s like the Macross effect, except much more 1:1.
Mage in a Barrel
